The pharmaceutical industry in Mexico faces a serious obstacle: delays of up to seven years in the approval of new medications by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris). This lag places Mexico far behind countries where marketing permits are granted within a matter of weeks, thus limiting patient access to medical innovations that could significantly improve their quality of life.
During the opening of Medical Expo 2024, the director of the Mexican Association of Pharmaceutical Research Industries (AMIIF), Larry Rubin, highlighted that while in other countries drug sales permits take between 45 and 60 days, in Mexico, patients must wait years to access new therapies. "This means that the medicines consumed by Mexicans can be medical technology from several years ago, while in other regions there are already more effective advances," Rubin noted.
The problem lies, according to Rubin, in Cofepris bureaucracy and the lack of political will to expedite these procedures. The situation, according to the AMIIF leader, could improve without the need for legal changes: "It is not a regulatory issue, it is a matter of will," he assured. With greater political willingness, he indicated, this delay could begin to be resolved immediately, providing Mexicans timely access to innovative treatments.
Rubin explained that proposals have already been presented to President Claudia Sheinbaum's team and to Cofepris to get Mexico to adopt approval times similar to international standards. With proper leadership and an effective response to this situation, the health of millions of Mexicans could benefit in the short term, reducing the current lag and allowing for better quality medical care.
