Armida Zúñiga Estrada has been appointed as the new head of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris) by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The appointment follows the recommendation of Alejandro Svarch, who until recently directed the commission.
With more than ten years of experience in the field of sanitary regulation, Zúñiga has stood out at the Commission for Analytical Control and Coverage Expansion (CCAYAC), where her leadership was fundamental in strengthening quality standards and maintaining ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 certifications. Furthermore, in 2017, CCAYAC received the National Quality Award, establishing itself as a benchmark in sanitary risk management.
Zúñiga Estrada is a graduate of UNAM as a pharmaceutical chemist biologist and has postgraduate studies in sciences from IPN, both with Honorable Mention, complemented by diplomas in Senior Management and Quality Management Systems. Her career also includes prominent roles in the public health sector in the state of Hidalgo, where she headed the State Public Health Laboratory and served as state commissioner for the Protection against Sanitary Risk, obtaining ISO 9001:2008 certification for all sanitary processes in the entity.
In addition to her career in regulation, Zúñiga has been a professor and researcher, contributing to the training of new generations in the field of public health. The new Cofepris commissioner begins her tenure with the commitment to strengthen sanitary supervision and control in the country, in the face of current challenges in health matters and population protection.
