The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris) has authorized the commercialization in Mexico of a highly effective vaccine against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for elderly adults, developed by pharmaceutical company GSK. This vaccine is designed to protect people over 60 years old, a group especially vulnerable to this respiratory infection, which can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, especially in those who already suffer from respiratory diseases.
José Ángel Regla Nava, virologist and researcher at the University of Guadalajara, explained the importance of this new tool: "RSV, similar in some symptoms to influenza and COVID-19, affects especially young children and adults over 60 years old, being more severe in those over 75 years old". This infection is responsible for half a million hospitalizations and more than 30,000 deaths each year worldwide, although in Mexico there is no specific record of its mortality.
The GSK vaccine approved by Cofepris offers efficacy greater than 94% to prevent severe cases and 80% for general cases. Additionally, it has the advantage of requiring a single dose, and was supported by studies conducted in the United States and Europe, where it has already been approved and used. It is still unknown whether this vaccine will require annual application or if a single dose can guarantee protection for more than one year, as preliminary data suggest immunity of at least two winter seasons.
Regla Nava noted that this vaccine could significantly reduce the burden of this disease, which each year shows peaks of pneumonia cases in elderly adults, both in Mexico and in the United States.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer is also in the process of approving a similar vaccine at Cofepris, which represents a crucial advance in protecting elderly people against RSV in Mexico.
