U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, will be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kennedy Jr., known for his controversial stance on vaccines and activism on health issues, will assume a key role in the incoming administration.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump stated: "For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and pharmaceutical companies that have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation regarding public health". This statement reinforces the narrative of distrust toward large corporations that has characterized part of the president-elect's rhetoric.
The relationship between Trump and Kennedy is not new. In August, Trump promised Kennedy an "important role" in his government after the latter withdrew his presidential candidacy and endorsed the Republican. At that time, Trump had hinted that Kennedy could take on various tasks, including the possibility of "going crazy about health", in reference to his critical positions on the management of traditional health policies.
This appointment reflects an unconventional shift in the direction of public health policy in the United States, generating both anticipation and concern about the possible changes that the Trump administration will bring in this area.
