Insecurity is always in relation to someone. We never have insecurity in a vacuum, it is always about how we compare ourselves with others or how we feel in the presence of a certain group.
John Cena's 2 Watches
John Cena comes to mind, a idol for many WWE fans. John Cena became famous for his particular fighting style and for popularizing the "You Can't See Me" signal, which became the victory chant of a generation for WWE fans.
Later John Cena made an unexpected reappearance in the world of cinema, including F9: The Fast Saga from the Fast & Furious franchise.
John Cena is a giant in every sense. He stands 1.85 meters tall, in wrestling he's a champion. And in cinema, also a great actor.
One would not think that a person like John Cena could suffer from the so-called "impostor syndrome." Or would they?
Well, in 2024 he appeared as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel's show where he told the story of his 2 watches.
More or less like this:
Jeff Goldblum: …I thought it was a pocket watch.
John Cena: Yes, it is, and it's broken.
Jeff Goldblum: What do you mean it's broken?
John Cena: It doesn't tell time. I broke it a long time ago, but I carry it with me. This watch tells time, but that other one gives perspective.
Jeff Goldblum: Perspective?
John Cena: Yes. It has engravings on both sides.
On the back it says: "Comparison is the thief of joy".
Before I felt uncomfortable in rooms like this, even though my calling is to speak in public.
I didn't value myself, so when I feel low self-esteem or uncomfortable, I remind myself of it and tell myself that I am enough and worthy of love.
On the other side it says Memento Mori, to remind myself that I am human and I am not above anyone.
It helps me keep perspective, not time.
