The Toxic Reality of Certain Companies

It is evident that in the workplace, many employees seek environments that offer stability, camaraderie, and a clear purpose. But, what happens when these aspects, instead of contributing to employee well-being, mask a toxic environment?

When Work Loyalty Traps Us

The story of Theranos is an emblematic example of this. Led by Elizabeth Holmes, this biotechnology company promoted an intensely secretive and controlling culture. Employees were expected to be extremely loyal, creating an atmosphere of distrust toward those who questioned the company's direction. Behind the façade of innovation and revolutionary promises in medical testing, a toxic environment was hidden in which blind loyalty was valued more than integrity and truth.

Corporate Missions that Chain Us

WeWork is another example of how a charismatic vision can obscure reality. With Adam Neumann at the helm, the company promoted an intense work culture, describing itself more as a mission or movement than a simple coworking company. Neumann's passionate vision and his emphasis on a strong community and corporate culture led many to compare it to a cult. Although it sold the idea of a shared and collaborative work space, behind the scenes, the corporate culture was more a projection of its leader's excessive ambitions than of a true sense of community.

Anchored to the Organizational Past

Resistance to change is natural. But clinging to the past and expecting everything to return to "the good times" can be harmful. Companies evolve, and employees must adapt or seek new horizons if they feel the company no longer aligns with their values. The solution is to allow yourself time to adapt and, if after a reasonable period the adjustment does not occur, consider new opportunities.
