MSD Addresses Urgency of Early Cancer Detection

MSD (Merck Sharp and Dohme) held a virtual event titled "Innovation in Cancer Care During its Early Stages" through Oncologia.mx, with the purpose of informing about the main types of cancer, including breast, prostate, thyroid, colon, and cervical cancer.

Dr. Miguel Fuentes, a physician, internist and medical oncologist graduated from the University of Guadalajara, highlighted the risk factors that can trigger different types of cancer.

He emphasized that the number of new cancer cases in Mexico in 2020 is alarming, with an average detection age of 52 years, in contrast to previous years where it ranged between 65 and 72 years old.

The importance of screening was emphasized as key to timely diagnosis, urging awareness among the population and the creation of prevention campaigns for various types of cancer, such as thyroid, colon, cervical and lung cancer, among others.

Dr. Fuentes highlighted that, contrary to common belief, the main risk factors for cancer are not always hereditary or genetic.

90% of cases are due to factors such as tobacco consumption, alcohol, overweight, sedentary lifestyle, medications and infections, emphasizing the importance of the oncologist's role in addressing symptoms early.

From a treatment perspective, Dr. Miguel Ángel Flores, Medical Manager at MSD, underscored the relationship between early detection and timely and effective treatment.

MSD has developed standard treatments and combined regimens to address tumors more precisely, seeking to convert scientific advances into innovative oncology medications to prevent and treat cancer effectively.
